Motor vehicle registration tag and tax receipts, 1940-[ongoing].

The probate judge is responsible for the issuance of motor vehicle license plates and renewal decals upon the payment of all assessed taxes and fees (see Ala. Code, 40-12-253 [1975]). The five-part receipt provides information about the vehicle type, its assessed value and age, tag and decal numbers, title number, taxes and fees due, and has signatures of the owner and county officials. Copies of this receipt are distributed to the vehicle owner, the State Department of Revenue, the tax collector, and the tax assessor. The probate office retains a copy for its files. This record began in 1940 and continues to the present.
